Letting go.

Yep, you guessed it! This is about to get really deep and really cheesy. But isn't that part of what dance is all about? Showing raw emotion and exaggerating all emotions to make sure that the people all the way in the back can see you?
In this post, I'll be talking about letting go when you're dancing. Yesterday evening I took a dance class with a teacher that I had never met before. the warm-up and exercises were the same kind that they usually were. But once she got to choreography, she turned to me and said: "let go. Don't think about what happened in your day today. Forget about everything and just dance."
And to be honest, that's exactly what I needed to hear. Most of us dance because it's our passion and we love it. So instead of focusing on hitting 5 pirouettes and jumping higher than the person next to you, focus on not thinking about anything but being as big as you can be. Think of every joint in your body, and lift out of them. Make your extensions as long as possible, and just be yourself!
The director of my dance studio once told me: "Less injuries happen when you take more risks". And as crazy as that sounds, its true! When you take more risks, you worry less about injuries which actually makes you less prone to injuries!
What I'm trying to tell you is that next time you're in class, forget about the outside world outside of the studio and focus on yourself. It's ok to be a little selfish at times and focus on yourself - it's important to ignore about what other people think and to cut loose from any negativity.
Don't let lack of technique or experience get to you! that's why you go to class - to improve and to grow both as a dancer and person.
